TROUT-FISHING SEASON.

About 15.000 trout fry were liberated in the Waikato River, at Cambridge, on Wednesday last. Anglers were out early on Thursday morning last, and the anticipation that the Waikato River would provide an increasing number of fish each year seems to be proving correct. Nearly all the anglers who were out landed some fine fish. 1 At Clevedon two anglers tried their luck on Thursday, one of them being successful, having secured six weighing 251b. They were caught within eight miles of the Clevedon Hotel, and fish are reported to be plentiful. Mr. W. Abbott was the successful angler, having secured the whole six, the other angler not being successful. The Herald correspondent saw four of the fish, and Mr. Abbott was having them photographed. They were fine specimens. The Government Tourist Agent at Wairoa advises that fish at Lake Waikaremoana are very good, and are providing excellent sport and a successful season is anticipated. Local anglers will be interested to learn of the success which attended Mr. W. Abbott, jun., on Thursday while fishing in the Wairoa River, at Clevedon. He landed nine rainbow trout, the first, it is stated, which have been caught in this stream. The fish averaged over 31b in weight, and were in splendid condition, a rather unusual thing for so early in the season. If the fish are plentiful it will be a great boon to city enthusiasts, as they will be able to go to Wairoa for week-end fishing. In the past Okoroire. which is 100 miles from Auckland, has been the nearest place where trout-fishing has been obtainable. A sample of the fish may be seen in Mr. W. H. Hazard's window, Queen-street.
