ATHLETICS.
The Amateur Athletic Union of the United States is still squabbling over the record <;f 9 3-ss. for a 100 yds dash made by Dan Kelly in Spokane recently, and there is a strong probability that the record will not be allowed. The union officials seem to be sceptical in regard to the genuineness of the record. However, the president of the union (Air. McCabc) says tho more he investigates the more lie is inclined to accept the record. The profit from the last Kalgoorlie " hundred" carnival totalled £322, which amount was handed to charities.
Ex-champion and world's record holder (250 yds) W. T. Macpherson lias returned to Australia from England. A very large entry has been received for Wren's big foot racing meeting, which is to be run next month. The entries exceed 700, made up as follows:—Principal events: Sheffield Handicap, 135; Bracelet, 147; Murmur Handicap, 95 ; Half-mile Handicap, .75; Mile Handicap, 53; Hurdle Race, 47; Walk, 80; Championship Mile, 17; International Scratch Race, 10. Amongst the entrants are representatives from all parts of the world, including Maxim, Whittingham (America), B. R. Day (England), Robinson, Dodds, and Curry (New Zealand), Animide, McCoy, Murray, Lynne, Miles, Church, Martin, Hickey, Reynolds, Marsh, Moore, ■Massey, Toose, Laycock, Conohan, Wholohan, Stunt?;, Ryan, Foy, Mashman, McGarry, and Brown (New South Wales), Smith, Joske, Stapleton, Horn, Murphy, Flanagan, Mahony, Chaplin (2), McGrory, Mporfield (Queensland). Elliott, Ronfrey, McCarthy, Houghton, Johnston. Terry (2) Todd, Cromie (West Australia). Willi?, Smith, l'oley (South Australia), and Dunoen (Tasmania). I The big German wrestler Gus Renuert just returned to Australia from a trip abroad with Hackenschmidt, has been matched against the Hindoo, Button Singh, for the. .championship of Australasia. The pair will probably meet in Sydney. Another Hindoo wrestler—Dlecpa—has arrived in Sydney with money to back himself against allcomers at from list to list 71b.
