MUSICAL AND ELOCUTIONARY CONTESTS.
The Auckland Band of Hope Union's musical and elocutionary contests were concluded in the foresters' Hall, Newton, last -night.' Mr. J. H. Muldo'on occupied the chair, and there was a very large attendance. The contests last night were as follows:—Vocal solo, B division: Alex. A. Thomson (" Don't Marry a Man if he Drinks"), Howard C. Gat-land ("The Winning Side May Laugh"), Davina ' Morrison (■' Angels of Temperance"), (J. Veville (.'arisen (" Star of Temperance"), Mabel Hamou ("What Will You Take for Me?"), Norman ('. Tucker ("The. Poor Drunkard's Child"), Florrie Ward (" My Darling Doll"). Dialogues: Eden Terrace Primitive. Methodist (" Montgomerie's Accident"). I'onsoiihy Baptist (same), St. David's (same). Action song: Eden Terrace . Primitive Methodist. Spelling bee, A division: Edith Pascoe, Ida Clark, Nellie Callaghan, Defence Juvenile Temple; Esse) Bach. Gladys Aze. Edna Loggie, Minnie Loggie, Tabernacle: May Ingham, Clarice Crafts, Ponsonby Baptist. Union selection: Vocal duets: B division, males ("Sadly I Ponder"); B division, females (" Three Green Bonnets"). The various competitive events which took place on Thursday night resulted as follows:— and piano duet; First prize, Jennie and William James (Ponsonby Baptist,); second, Alfred Dale and. Reading (Tabernacle). Piano and violin duet: First, Olive Good and William Westwnter (Church of Christ). Piano solo: Class —Second. Edna Chumun (Beresford-street 8.H.). Class C—Males, first Arthur Eady (Tabernacle); females, lirst Marion Mason Patrick (Newton Public Band of Hope). Reciting: Class AMales, William Richards (St. John's Methodist Band of Hope). Class C—Females, first Clara Edwards (Ponsonby Baptist). The judges were: Music—Messrs. R. Leslie Hunt, F.1.G.C.M., John McDougall, and G. Mummer. Elocution Mrs. Coulam and Messrs. J. C. Dickenson and C.B. King. '
Tlio monthly meeting of the Waikato Hospital Board was held on Thursday. There were present : Messrs. Dey (chairman). Primrose, McGuirk, Cowling, Gavin, Clarke, Fisher, Potts, Chepmell, and Bell. Mrs. Furby forwarded a cheque for £38. being the profit from the children's ball organised by her. A vote of thanks was passed to Mrs. Ftirby. The treasurer reported as follows: Receipts: To Aroha Borough, £30; * Government" subsidy, £163 17s; old age pensions," £19 10*; rents, £1 15s; fees, £111 3s 6d ; donation (Lodge Beta), £5 ss; Mrs. Furby (ball), £38. Dr. : Balance. £1517 3s sd; Pinko County Council. £622 8s : Waikato Cdunty Council, £174; Waipa County Council, £316; Raglan County Council, £332 18s; Hamilton Borough Council, £111 12s; To Aroha. Borough Council, £59 10s: total, £1616 Bs. It was moved by the chairman and seconded by Mr. Primrose that Mr. Conradi be paid £40 in recognition of his services in floating the loan. Mr. Chepmell pointed out that half the usual commission, for which Mr. Conradi offered to do the work, only amounted to £35, and lie did not think they would be right if they paid more. It was decided to pay £35 only. A vote of thanks was passed for services rendered. The district engineer, for the purpose of furnishing a Parliamentary return, asked for a list of King Country patients who had been treated in the hospital between January 1, 1901, and Septemlier 25. 1906. The return showed that they totalled 299, of which 91 were accident cases. The North Auckland Hospital Board claimed against the Waikato Board for charitable aid given to a Waikato resident. Legal advice was token, and was to the elfect that as the person had lived for some mouths in Whangarei without applying for aid the Waikato Board >as nut liable. It was decided to repudiate responsibility. There were six applications for the position of porter. David Leckie was appointed. Dr. Douglas reported a* follows—Number of patients at last : return, 40 males and 16 females; admitted since, 22 males and six females: deaths, six males and one te- j male: discharged, 24 males and nine females, remaining at date, 32 male* and 12 females.
