SUNDAY CONCERTS AT WAIHI.

PERMITS TO BE REFUSED BY THE COUNCIL. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Waihi. Friday, The question of Sunday concerts was discussed at the Borough Council meeting last night, on a motion introduced by Mr. J. Slevin, to the effect that in future permits for sacred concerts be not given. Mr. McC.n'lny seconded the motion. Mr. Evans considered that the motion, if carried, would interfere with the liberties of those who did not go to church. Mr. Carter thought that the trouble lay in the fact that the churches were empty 011 Sundays. Messrs. Slevin, McCartny. and the chairman (Mr. J. Foster) spoke in favour of the motion, the main argument used being that professionals had six days to work the same as others, and they should not be allowed to squeeze in another evening under the guise of a sacred concert. In any case, it was pointed out that professionals 011 the stage were entitled to a day's rest. ■ The motion was carried, only Messrs. Evans and Carter voting against it.
