BUS ACCIDENT AT WAIUKU.
FALL OVER AN EMBANKMENT. SEVERAL PASSENGERS INJURED. :' [BT TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] ; • . , Waitjku, Wednesday. A serious 'bus accident • happened her* last night, and the escapes from serious \ consequences wero most miraculous. A party of Masons, consisting of 11 per--1 sons, were visiting the district for the pur- £' pose of holding a meeting, and arrangements had been made to bring them as far as the Pollok in the s.s. Rarawa, and to meet them there with an oil launch. The boat being very much behind time, Parker's 'bus was sent to Waipipi to meet .the launch. On the journey to Waiuku, and when coming down a badly-formed piece of road known as Flavell's Hill, it being very dark, the 'bus got off the formation, and the brake refused to,act. The horses got under way, and the 'bus going over an embankment turned completely upside down. The following is the list of passengers and the nature of their injuries: — J. .McKay, badly cut about the head. J. D. Webster, wrist badly sprained. H. Bradney, nasty cut on the head. (i. Russell, cut hand, arm hurt, and much shaken. f v ' C. Davidson, hand'hurt. : ' C. F. Allen, some slight cuts. J M. DJHy, scratched about the face. Messrs. J. Carnie, G. Poole, W. J. Perry, and W. McPhail escaped with a shaking. Mr. S. Perrin, storekeeper, who went to meet the visitors, is badly hurt, being much bruised, and will be confined to his bed for some time. * The driver, T. Campbell, escaped unhurt. " Dr. Clouston, assisted by Mr. King, chemist, waa fully three hours dressing the j wounds of the passengers, some of the cuts having to hemstitched. 5 The 'bus is greatly damaged, and, as showing the position it was in, the inside of the. roof is covered with blood. Mr. Molloy, of the, Kentish Hotel, did all he could for the comfort of the injured. ■■: . Sj! tt • \- K : h'l ■ ' Mr. J. D. Webster, fruiterer, of Lower Queen-street, one of; the passengers by the coach, in relating his i experience to a Herald reporter last evening, stated that they were proceeding along hi the ordinary way, when, without any warning, the coach toppled over an embankment about. 4ft high. Seven of them (including the driver) were sitting on the - outside seats, and were thrown to the ground.; He (Mr. Webster) landed on his right side, and sustained a sprained -wrist. The other outside passengers also escaped with\minor injuries. The ' passengers, inside, however, fared the worst, and sustained severe "cuts, mostly caused by broken glass.', The driver and horses escaped uninjured. \-
