I A fatal case of plague baa occurred at I Paddington. The patient contracted the' disease when removing a dead rat in the city premises where he was employed. It is the '• first case since July 14. THE FEDERAL CAMPAIGN. (Received October 9. 1.15 a.m.) '-'Sydney, October 8. > The Labour leader (Mr. Watson) opened: his election campaign at a large meeting at Redfem to-night. Ha was given a'good reception. His speech was mainly anelaboration of the Labour manifesto. THE LAND CASES. (Received October 9, 1.15, a.m.) Sydney, October 8. A special Criminal Court has been constituted to hear the charges .of conspiracy m the land cases against Willis, McNair, Hc-s----kins, and Crick, and Willis and Bath. Application was made in both cases for a postponement to prepare the defence. The first case was adjourned for a fortnight, and the second to November 5. RAILWAY COMMISSIONERS WANTED. (Received Octobers, 1.15 a.m.) Sydney, October 8. The Government are advertising for Railway Commissioners. The Chief Commissioner's salary is to be £3000, and the two assistants £1500 each.
