GISBORNE HIGH SCHOOL OPENED.

SPEECH BY HON. J. A. MILLAR. i . [BY TELEGRAPH.OWN correspondent.] Gisbohne, Monday. The formal opening of the new building for the Gisborne District High School took place to-day. The Hon. J. A. Millar gave an address. He said there was one thing he would like to point out, and that was that when this district was transferred from Auckland in 1878 the roll of the Gisborne school only stood at 164 pupils, a fact which showed the great progress that had been made in this district. To-day they were about to open a school capable of accommodating over 1200 pupils. He understood there were some members of the School Committee and the Board who were inclined to think, the school might, have been a little larger, but he pointed ''<. out alter schools attained a certain size they became too large for efficient supervision. He thought it was desirable that they should start smaller schools in the colony,* but not for the purpose of taking away from schools already doing good work.
