BOROUGH COUNCILS.

GREY LYNN. .The ordinary meeting of the Grey Lynat ■ Borough Council was held last evening, tile Mayor, Mr. J. Farrell, in the chair. There! were also present: Messrs. G. Sayers, C. B. King, W. Murray, A. B. Donald, -W. W. Dumper,. W. Martin, W. Dimery, W. S.. Smith, and A. A. Creamer. Police Protection: Replies were received from the lion. G. Fowids and Commissioner Dinnie, head of ill*" Police Department, relative in th*' Council's application for increased peiice protection for the Grey Lynn district. Mr. Fowlds stated that the matter had been referred to the Minister for Jutlice, and the Commissioner replied that the matter was receiving the attention of the authorities. The letters were received. Lowering Gas Mains: Messrs. Reed and. Bailey, the Council's solicitors, forwarded the accounts detailing the amount claimedby the Auckland lias Company for lowering gas mains in the district after the regrading of the streets by the Council. These included £282 3- 9d for which the Gas Company obtained judgment, and an additional £76 4s 2d expended in the work after judgement was obtained. The accounts were referred to the Finance Committee for report. Great North Road Deviation: The Mayor informed the Council that the grant for the Great North Road deviation work and the additional sum of £448 would'appear on the Supplementary Estimates. This would enable a further portion i of the road to be proceeded with, and :he suggested'.: that- it should be left.; to the Streets l Committee to arrange for plans and other details in order that the work might be taken in hand imroe-' diatoly. This was agreed to. . Footpath : Mr. J. Collide -wrote asking the Council to have the footpath leading to his residence in Williamson's Avenue completed. The matter was referred to the Streets * ! Committee for report. - > Storm Water: The secretary (Mr. E. J. Sexton) of the Grey Lynn Bowling Club wrote asking the Council to have the atom* water carried off at the section secured by the club as a bowling green. Referred ''to the Streets Committee for report. Finance: Accounts amounting to £322 153 were passed for payment. Contribution to Now Zealand Exhibition: The Council decided to vote a sum of £10 towards the cost of the Auckland provincial court, at, the New Zealand International Exhibition. . s ■ PARNELL. A meeting of the Parnell Borough Council was hold last, night, and was attended by the Mayor (Mr. G. W. Basley) and Messrs. Tapper, Briggs, Foster, Wood, Lusk, Fowler, Hunter, Jidgecumbe, and Mitchell. Penny Section Tramcars: A letter was received from' the managing director of the Auckland Tramways Company (Mr. P. M. Hansen) stating that the penny section cars which he had proposed to place on the Parnell line. were additional to the through cars. t These sectional cars had now been running for about three weeks, and the company found that only one trip of those run wast sufficiently patronised by the public. After • a further fortnight's trial he proposed in the event of traffic proving inadequate to warrant the new time-table to make another suggestion for an improvement in regard to the penny section, time-table. The letter was received ponding further communication. Water Consumption: The turncock reported- that the consumption of water dur- < ing the past fortnight had been 1,690,000 gallons, 1,346,000 gallons through Ponsonby meter and 344,000 gallons through the Khyber Pass meter. Manukau Road : Mr. 'Edgebumbo gave notice that he would move at the next meeting of the Council, "That the shopkeepers along Manukau Road be no longer allowed to use the borough water for laying the dust in front of their premises, and that the remaining standpipes be removed." . Fire Plugs: On being asked to speak regarding tiro plugs Captain Cowan, of the, Parnell Fire Brigade, said that he would advocate putting fire plugs closer together. At present they -'were 100 yds apart, and it took, a large leading hose,.; which was too long.to make a connection, and weakened the water pressure. On the motion of Mr. Tapper, seconded by Mr. Foster, it was decided to, have fire plugs placed 50yds apart. . Finance: Accounts amounting to £185 lis 6d wore passed for payment. > NEWMARKET. An ordinary meeting of the Newmarket Borough Council was held last evening. Tlms Mayor (Mi: F. Bennett) presided, and there were also present: Messrs. J. Seccombe, C. 'Leek, MeColl (2), H. Kinder, W. Edgcrle.v, and R. Holmes. The Remuera Road Board wrote drawing attention;to: a serious; nuisance which exists in the creek leading to Ilobson Bay. The nuisance is caused through the drainage from portions of the Epsom and Remuera, districts and the Borough of Newmarket, conveyed into a culvert in the railway station yard that does not.' connect ' with the ' Hobson Bay - sewer, /being discharged into ; the open creek.; The Remuera Board's engineer estimated ' the cost of connecting th« culvert with the sewer at £50, and the Newmarket Council was asked to contribute, towards the cost of this work. It was decided to refer the matter to the Streets Committee. Hancock and Co. wrote asking that, as some time ago the, price of water was 'lower-" -ed from '. the • city, and; the water-rate i«. duccd to the Council, it might also be reduced to them. The. matter was referred to the Waterworks Committee. The question of dusty roots came up, and it was thought that a systematic, watering of the streets • was the lest, means of abating the nuisance. < Councillor A. ~T.i-Scceombe notified that he ; Was willing to carry on the duties of chair-' /man of the Streets Committee till the end' , of the year. ■..-■. ■ ONEHUNGA. ■ : • The ' usual fortnightly meeting of th» : Onohuiiga Borough Council was held last • night in the Council Chambers. There were present: The Mayor (Mr. John Row*!. Messrs. Blyth, Barr, .Moody, Osborne, Williams, Morton, ledge, and Skinner. The overdraft was now £445 7s lOd, and the cemetery account in credit £151 1-. £d. Outward correspondence: The clerk was instructed, to inform the Mount Roskill Road - Board that the Borough Council could not entertain the request for £20 towards White' Swan Road. A vote of condolence with the family of the late Mr. Brookfield was passed, the Council standing. A letter was received from the manager of the Union Steam Ship Company protesting against the rescinding of the 20 per cent, reduction allowed to the shipping in the oast.; The Council . had no recommendation to make in the matter. A letter was received, from Mr. K. Sutherland stating that in the road formation adjoining his property no provision had hen made for drainage, and that a lagoon had been formed, and asking the Council to attend to the matter. Referred to Council in committee. A letter was received from Dr. Frengley>asking if the Council (1)" in-tended-to go 'on immediately with the con- ' struction of the new reservoir; (2) if the Council would be "prepared to lay a pipalong Arawa-street in the meantime; (3) .whether the Council would permit him to , connect a * pipe to that'supplying the existing water-trough, if it was not intended to go on with reservoir immediately. , The matter was referred to the Council, in committee.. Mr. Moody was present, and showed receipts for inspection of # his ' slaughterhouse. It was agreed to send a copy of the letter to Mr. D. Neiisoji. Mr. Barr moved,''" That, all the resolutions standing in the books, re abattoirs, Ix; rescinded.", Mr. Moody seconded. This was agreed to. The Mayor, stated that it was time something was done, re the Mangere Bridge. He thought that the Council should meet the Mangere Road Board and form a deputation to approach the Government, with the object, of getting an endowment set aside for "the upkeep of the bridge. He said that in one year about £1400 had been spent on the bridge. He thought: the Government had made a; great mistake in ; handing back a large property, valued over £4000, to the Maoris, who did not even live on the property. The clerk was instructed to write to the Mangere Road Board and arrange a night to > meet and discuss the question. Messrs. Barr, Skinner. Blvth, Moody, and the Mayor were appointed a committee to confer with the Road Board. Mr. Williams gave notice of motion, "That plans and specifications be prepared 1 for a new fire brigade station, at a cost not exceeding £150." It. was recommended that the sum of £20 lte donated towards ,the;. Onehunga Town Band for the purpose of getting uniforms. Mr. Morton gave notice- of motion to ask the Gas .Company to extend their mains eastward in Grey-street, Arthur-street, and Church-street, with a view to providing eight M lamps.
