A GREAT LANDOWNER.
The Duke of Sutherland is 55. The duke owns a million and a-quarter acres. Openair life appeals to him. He is devoted to fishing, shooting, and yachting, and he owns in Dunrobin Castle the oldest inhabited house in the kingdom. The duke has not been able to spare much time for public affairs, though latterly he has been president of the Tariff Reform League. The Duke and Duchess of Sutherland have on frequent occasions entertained the King and Queen and other members of Royalty. One sometimes wonders (says the* Evening Standard) what London would be like during the season if Stafford House were closed, for the Duke of Sutherland has always been most generous in placing this magnificent palace at the- disposal of his friends who are interested in the cause of charity. The hall, with its superb staircase, 'makes an ideal place for entertainments. They say that a person has to apply two years in advance if he wishes to obtain permission to hold an entertainment at Stafford House, so generously has it been bestowed.
