LETTERS TO THE EDITOR.

THE REV. W. BEATTY AND GAMBLING. Sir, regret very much that in the inter* view which your representative had with me on the subject of gambling I failed to make myself clear on one point, i.e., as regards insurance. To speak of insurance as gambling would be inconsistent with my own definition of gambling, as '.'taking an undue risk." For the man who insures plainly does so to minimise, a3 far as possible, his risk, and so he is a prudent perron, not. a gambler. And, of course, liny soundly conducted insurance company will by spreading its risks, and accumulating a reserve, guard against, or provide, for, the possibility of serious losses. I intended to instance insurance merely as an illustration of the fallacy of the statement that gambling is taking something for nothing. If those, who are declaiming against gambling would only ask themselves two questions they would both understand more clearly what then. object is and would be led to recognise more distinctly the most efficient means for attaining that object The two questions are:—What is gambling? mid Why am I mys>lf not a gambler? t> c, • i ■'•"■'i-' „, Wu - Beat". Remuera, September 21.
