MEETINGS.

PROTESTANT DEFENCE ASSOCIATION. The usual meeting of the Protestant Defence Association was held on Tuesday in the Protestant Hall, Newton, and took the form of a social for members and friends. Mr. Chas. Watt (president) occupied the chair, and short addresses were given by him and the Rev. Jas. Wilson (vice-president). Songs, recitations, and instrumental soloj wore contributed by several friends, aiid refreshments were handed round, after which a short address was given by Mr. Graham, and the meeting closed with the National Anthem. OTAHUIIU ROAD BOARD. The fortnightly meeting of the Road Board was. held oft Tuesday evening. Present: Mr. J. Todd (chairman), Dr. Rowley, Messrs. Andrew, Lippiatt, and Brady. The chairman stated that the contractor for supplying road metal had informed him there would be some difficulty in procuring the full quantity of metal originally agreed upon, but the contract had now been signed to supply 200 yds equal to sample in Board's possession. The specification and plans for drainage, work to be done on Panmuro Road were approved. The clerk reported the progress made by him in collecting subscriptions to the Seddon memorial fund, to which the Board has contributed £5. The matter of wharf charges was discussed, and the schedule of fees as drawn up by Mr. Andrew and the clerk was agreed to with some slight amendments. The members of the Board arranged to meet at the square near the workmen's cottages on Station Road to settle what will require to be done at this place. The offer of Mr. Lloyd to supply footpath metal in quantity required and to spread the same at 6d per load extra was accepted. It was agreed that the Board supply the necessary pipes for a ditch at Mr. Stoddart's property if he will do the work of laving and filling in. The matter of a crossing to the Salvation Army barracks, and applications for loads of metal from several ratepayers were left in the hands of the chairman to arrange. ________
