GALLERY NOTES AND LOBBY
GOSSIP. fBT TELEGRAPH.—SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, Wednesday. The Advisability of reducing the railway freights now charged on the railway for fencing-wire was urged on the Minister for Railways to-day by Mr. Kirkbride. Mr. Hall-Jones replied that, " Plain fenc-ing-wire is charged at class ' D' rates, and barbed wire at class ' C rates. These are the two lowest merchandise rates in the tariff, and are reasonable for the services performed. In addition to the ordinary classified rates, a special rate of 18s per ton is in operation in respect to fencing wire and materials consigned from Auckland or Newmarket to Te Aroha or Paeroa, and 20s per ton from Newmarket to stations on the Waihi line." He added that he could make no further reduction at present. <• /
