LEPROSY. IN THE {ISLANDS.-
.':•:„ £ ,;J ; * —~ [Brl TELEGRAPH.SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT. ■ V ',' Wellington, Wednesday. • Dr. Pomare, who visited Rarotonga a few months ago, ' investigated the alarming reports which were circulated regarding the spread of leprosy in the Cook Group. He came to-the conclusion, that they were unfounded. Isolation is carried . out generally. The' question of looking after the lepers at Penrhyn is one to be inquired 1 into. . The unfortunates do not get enough to cat. There will be no need to ask for a volunteer as a keeper, as we have already an unrecognised Father Da mien in Meka and his young wife, who volunteered to live on the island in order to be near their adopted son. Meka. does all the fishing and looking after the sufferers, and for this he receives no recognition from the civilised world either in funds or praise. Perhaps when the Great Master will call His own, 4. he will say unto him: "Good and faithful-servant."
