AN INFANT'S DEATH.
WOMAN CHARGED WITH MAN- -,;. SLAUGHTER. [BY TELEGRAPH.— ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, Wednesday. The result of an inquest held on the body of an infant -to-day was that Mrs. Mary Guy, in whose custody the child had been placed, was arrested to-night on a charge of manslaughter. The circumstances of the case were that the infant, the child of a single girl, had been given into Mrs. Guy's care, £20 being paid by the mother. The child died on Sunday last, not having been seen by a medical man. It was. 21 months old. The surgeon who made the post-mortem examination said lie found the body thin and emaciated. It weighed about half what it should have done. There was hardly any fat on the body. There was no sign of food in the stomach or intestines. The child had been given a lung balsam, prepared by a local chemist. This contained tincture of chloroform and morphia and laudununi. The immediate cause of death was distension of the stomach, due to opium paralysis, acting on diseased lungs. Neglect was one of the causes of death. The jury found that the child died of neglect and want of nourishment.
