COROMANDEL COUNTY COUNCIL.

COROUAXDBti, Tuesday. The monthly meeting of the Coromandel County Council was held yesterday. Communication* were read und dealt with as follows:—From the Mayor of Wellington re national memorial to the lute Mr. Seddon : It was decided to invite subscriptions. From the. Under-Secretary for Mines in reply to a request for an additional grant, of £200 for Coromandel Wharf Road extension, advising the Council to expend the Riant already available, and, if insufficient, to apply for more. From the Mayor of Auckland re the Auckland memorial to the late Mr. Seddon : It was decided that the Council favours the. national memorial. From the Minister for Mine*, intimating that he had laid the Council's request for a survey of the Pungnpunga Road before the Minister for Lands, who had agreed to the survey being made by a Government surveyor. From the .Mines Department, authorising the expenditure of £15 for the Kuaotunu Cemetery Road by day labour. From the Mines Department, intimating: that the Coromandel School of Mines lias agreed to make assays of ore. tree of cost to prospectors. From .1. Huntley, Kuaotuuu, applying for aid to prospecting at Wailaia under class 1: Recommended. It was decided to request the Survey Department to lay off the Matamalaluirakeke-Cabooge Kay Bond. The resolution abolishing the non-consumers' water rate was confirmed.

Mr. Owen Evans was permanently appointed surfaceman for Fort Charles Hiding. It was resolved thai application he made to the Minister for Public Works lor a grant of £1000 to construct a bridge across the Manaia River on the main Thames Road.

It was decided to urge upon the Premier the necessity of telephone communication between Cabbage Bay and Tort Charles. Mr. Sherlock, secretary of the tire brigade, urged hat more interest should ho shown in the brigade and more encouragement be given. The Chairman stated he was not aware that •any request had not been complied with, and there eertnintly was not any intentional slight. Ho was asked to put the brigade's request in writing and the board of works was authorised to deal Willi the same.

It was decided that a circular he issued inviting the ooperation of all county councils in getting a law passed imposing a tax' of, say, £10 per annum upon all retail travellers canvassing from house to house for orders.

The Land and Survey Department .wrote regarding the Cape Colville Road being laid out, in such a way as to give access to pastoral leases. The engineer reported that it was impracticable to make one toad to meet the need of all the settlers.

Messrs. Walker and Burgess reported that the Bill for altering the boundaries between Thames and Coromandel counties had been introduced into Parliament by the lion. .1. McGowim. The matter had been referred to the Local Bills Committee and two counter-petitions bad been presented. Further consideration had been deferred in order to allow Coromandel County to adduce evidence. Mr. O'Brien said the Council should send a representative to Wellington and pay bis expenses to lay the matter properly before the Local Bills Committee. Mr. James stated that the Thames County had been canvassed for sig. natures against the Bill being passed, and if the matter were judged merely from the number of signatures Coromandel must fail. The chairman was authorised to proceed to Wellington to place the matter before the Local Bills Committee.
