SIX MONTHS SOLDIERS.
SUGGESTED EXTENSION OF
THE SYSTEM.
By Telegraph.—Press Association.—
London,. September 16. The Spectator, referring to the success of its experiment in producing a company of militia thoroughly trained in six months, says it would be possible in the same way to form a militia force of 300,000 men at comparatively small cost.
The Spectator and its readers carried out the experiment of training 100 men as militia and making them efficient soldiers within six months at a cost of £3500, or £35 per head. The idea is that six devoted systematically to thorough training is more effective than the ordinary militia drill of a few weeks spread over a number of years.
