NEW ZEALAND PRODUCE IN LONDON. [FROM OCR OWJT CORRESPONDENT.] . . . v London, August 11, WOOL. Messrs. Weddel write to say that nine© the dosing of the last wool sales there has been a certain demand tor merinos, as well as for crossbreds, on this market, and sales have been effected at values which have marked some improvement on the closing rate* of the auctions. Buyers' limits, however, have not shown such elasticity*, and the inquiries have proved to be in excess of the actual transactions. There is in all centres of the industry a general disposition shown to mark time, and as, for the moment, there is no very special call on the moderate supplies at present in the hands of the trade buying operations have been reduced, to the very smallest dimensions. At the same time holder.-, and especially those of greasy wools, are in no wot attempting to force sales. Continental futures have been showing some fluctuations recently, and. art bearing out the contention that the recent fall in prices of the raw material has been overdoue, it is worthy of note that distant quotations are oil the upgrade 'again. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company say that the position of . the wool market 'has shown no material alteration since the close of the last sales. There has been some inquiry for bought-in lot* and some sales have taken' place at an advance on the prices previously bid. The violent fluctuations of the Continental tonne markets, however, and uneasiness iu financial circles consequent upon the disturbed state of affairs in Russia, have of late tended to shake confidence in the outlook, with the result that a quiet feeling for the time being prevails in the manufacturing centres of the industry here and on the Continent, but reports from the United States are more favourable. Tilings have been quiet in the, wool market, and. although immediately subsequent to the finish of the recent auctions a very fair amount of inquiry was received, yet sales (write the National Mortgage and Agency Company) .have proved hard to effect, and the transactions have not reached big figures. Reports from other home centres, as well as from the Continent, all indicate a somewhat similar state of affairs. Buyers and holders are both waiting quietly for something to turn up. At present confidence in the future of wool is somewhat shaken as a result of the setback experienced recently in nearly oil classes of the produce, but sellers still hold that the present trade situation is really exceedingly sound, and that a very little more life in the "trade would bring users into the market again. ' . . NEW ZEALAND MEAT. It is remarked by the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company that a very slow trade has been experienced for New Zealand mutton, the principal inquiry being for light careases averaging 521b, but carcases weighing 6411> .and over are to a great extent neglected. Prices have been fairly well maintained, but for secondary description's they are slightly easier. With supplies more than sufficient to meet a slight falling off in the demand, prices for New Zealand lamb have declined id per lb. Offerings of New Zealand beef have been plentiful and have met a fairly good demand, but while hindquarters are slightly firmer forequarters rule lower. .Messrs. Weddel report the arrival of 100.000 carcases of New Zealand mutton during the last fortnight. The demand continues to be very slow, and present supplies are more than sufficient for current requirements. In these circumstances it is so far satisfactory that there has been no reduction in values, although the market da-lea weak. Arrivals of lambs show a marked falling off, totalling only 125,000 carcases from New Zealand and 2000 carcases from the River Plato during the last fortnight. Messrs. Weddel say there is now less inquiry at Smithfield, but there is an increasing demand from the provinces and the seaside towns now that the holiday season is at its height. This transference of the trade from London to the country is responsible for an expansion in the rate of sale of small lambs, and a corresponding reduction in the case of both large lamia and legs. GRAIN. Stocks of New Zealand wheat are exhausted; for New Zealand oats a quiet market, at about late rates, is reported by Messrs. Weddel. The market for New Zealand "beans is still firm at the quotations of 54s 6d to 35s 6d per 5041b. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company state that there is a fair demand for oats, but that prices for the common qualities favour buyers; New Zealand sparrowbills are quoted at. 22s 6d to 23s per 3241b; finest at 24s to 24s 6d, and Danish at 19s to 19s 6d per 3201b. Beans are firm, and peas are nominally unchanged. There is very little inquiry for cocksfoot, and no • transactions are reported. America is offering recleaned seed at 48s per cwt c.i.f., and this has a weakening effect on the market for the colonial seed ; 191b medium seed is quoted at 49s nominally, 181b medium at 47s and 47s 9d nominally, and 171b medium seed 46s to 46s 9d nominally, per cwt, c.i.f. < NEW ZEALAND FLAX. , In sympathy with the weakness in Manila, the market lias been quiet for New Zealand flax, and the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co. report that prices have fallen 10s to 15s per ton, with only a limited business passing at the decline. Good fair spot is quoted at £34 ss; July-August, £34 ss: October-December, £34 ss: fair spot, £32 ss, and October-December £32; fair current Manila, July-September, £43. Towis in fair demand at £12 5s per ton, e.i.f. The National Mortgage and Agency Company speak of a decline of 15s to 20s per ton on New Zealand flax, in sympathy with Manila: at the decline only a limited business has been transacted. The tone at the close is very steady, with buyers at £34 and £321 for good' fair aiid fair respectively for this year's shipment. The sales amount to about 400 tons. Spot and near good fair. £33 10s to £34; , fair, £31 15s to £32: -July-September,,-.i to October-December, good fair, £34; fair, £31 to £32. SKINS. I hear from the National Mortgage and Agency Company that there has not been much inquiry for hides, although prices remain nominally unchanged. About 500 horse hides were offered at the last auctions, and all were sold. Best, at 14s 6d.to 17s; seconds and small, 6s 7jd to 13s 6d ; and thirds, 6s 7£d to 6s 9d per hide. Private transactions are again the principal feature of the leather market, and prices remain firm. There has been a good demand for basils at firm rates. Supplies of pelts are still coming forward freely, but- the season is now getting well advanced, and before long the arrivals will show a marked falling off. The market is firm, but rather quiet in consequence of the high prices ruling. The probability is that the usual autumn demand from the"United States will soon be experienced, and this will give London an active market again. Quotations are unchanged. In the absence of sales there is nothing of interest to note with regard to rabbitskiiu. TALLOW. There has been only one sale of tallow during the past two weeks. Messrs. Weddel write that mutton tallow lias been a little dull of sale, but there is now an improved demand for the small quantity available. Mixed sorts and low qualities continue in strong demand at full prices, end as Premier Jus is scarce on the spot and wanted, there is now every possibility of line New Zealand mutton being in better demand, this article having had a slow sale for some months past. Home melt is not too plentiful, while the edible qualities are decidedly scarce. In South American there is little offering from the River Plate, but the earlier positions are attracting more attention than usual. The prices paid fur beef and mutton are respectively 29s 9d to 30s 3d c.i.f. London or Liverpool, hut for afloat, parcels and early shipment sellers now ask 3d to 6d per cwt .'"ore money, which at present is not available. The tallow market has been firm throughout the month at about unchanged rates, but, with a tendency to slightly firmer values where any alteration has taken place. WAIHOU SALE. Messrs. McXicol and Co. report :-At Waihou on onn i" i° A " we had a hill yarding of cattle, the 900 head penned being - made up ° f 60 head beef! /00 stores, pnd 100 springers.
