HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE AID BOARD.

The ordinary meeting of the Auckland Hospital and Charitable Aid Board was held yesterday afternoon. Mr. J. Fitt presided (in the absence of the chairman), and there were also present Messrs. W. R. Bloomfield, O. Grey, A. Sturges, and M. Casey. Probationary Nurses: A letter was read from the Minister in charge of Hospitals (the Hon. G. Fowlds), stating that when the replies from the various hospital boards re probationary "■ nurses were received ,';< seven hospitals were selected as. an initial expeii; meat in the scheme of placing such nurses on the staff. If the experiment succeeded the Government would doubtless consider the question of extending the numbei of hospitals to which the scheme was to apply. The secretary stated that the Auckland Hospital was not one of the seven referred to. Tenders: The following tenders were received for the erection of fire escapes at the Nurses' Homo:G. B. Braithwaite, £365; H. C. Small, £388; W. Casey, £438; J. Guthrie, £375; Arch. Grandison, £318; Newson and Cantling, £360; S. I. Clarke, £326. The architect's estimate was £320. Mr. Grandison's tender, being the lowest, was accepted. The following tenders were received for an p.mbulance similar to that which was imported by the Health Department:—Harrison and Gash, £135; Cousins and Cousins, £115; and Cousins and Attin, £135. The lowest tender was accepted. The secretary stated that it would cost the Board £123 7s lid to import a similar vehicle from England. Nurses' Uniform: The lady superintendent forwarded a request from the nursing staff asking the Board to allow the staff and pupil-nurses to wear the "Sister Dora" in place of the cap now in use, and at the same time authorise an alteration being made in the style of aprons, so as to give a bib covering more of the dress. The change would necessitate a slight increase in the eo3t of the uniform for this year, as about 800 to 1000 aprons would require to be altered. It was decided that the changes be authorised as soon as the existing supplies are worn out.
