Captain John Campbell, of the s.s. Hanpiri, was a passenger to Wellington by the TakapuniHjwterday to rejoin his vessel.
General Babingtun, Captain Campbell, the Hon. F. Trash, M.L.C., and Messrs. A: Kidd, G. Laurenson, T. Parata, and Heaton Rhodes. M.H.R.'s, left Lyttelton for Wellington last night by the Rotomahana. The Rev. Father Holbrook, of St. Patrick's Cathedral, celebrated the anniversary of his ordination yesterday, when a large party of local clergy met at dinner at St. Patrick's Presbytery. On Saturday, the children of St. Patricks, with whom the reverend gentleman is a great favourite, made him al presentation. A pleasing cereindny took place in the Bank of Australasia on Saturday morning, •when a presentation was made to Mr. P. H.. Calkin, who. has been transferred to Wellington. Mr. Fookes, on behalf of the staff, handed to Mr. Callan a handsome case of pipes. Mr. Callan left for Wellington by the Rarawa on Sunday. ' A Dunedin Press Association telegram states that Mr.. E. F. Black, of the Dunedin office, has been proiaoted to the Auckland business management of the Australian Widows' Fund Life Assurance Society. Mr. Black is one of the bowlers selected to make the Australian tour, and will not take up his new- position till his return. ■ Mr. J. Epps, of the Devonport Volunteer Fire Brigade, who is about to proceed to Napier, was entertained .by the members of the brigade at a farewell social last evening. A most enjoyable time was spent. Much regret was expressed at Mr. Epps' departure, and all wished him success in his new sphere. During the evening a presentation was made to Fireman Fulljames on the occasion of his approaching marriage. At the Young Men's Christian Association- strangers' tea on Sunday evening a very valuable presentation was made by Mr. J. Lock, on behalf of the members, to the general secretary, Mr. J. G. Mitchell, to mark the occasion of his marriage, an'd also as" a recognition of the esteem in which he is held by the members. Mr. Mitchell, who was accompanied by Mrs. Mitchell, suitably responded. An "At Home" was tendered by Mrs. Goodwyn-Areher at the Veterans' Horn* yesterday afternoon by way of a farewell lo Mrs. 'R. Bedford, who leaves shortly on a tour of America and Europe. Great interest has been taken by Mrs. Bedford in the Veterans' Home and in the welfare of the veterans. The function, which was largely attended, took the form of a. concert, held in the spacious library. The following contributed to the programme: Misses Draper and A. Stevenson, Mesdame.s Roberts and Arch. Tavler, the Rev. W. E. Gillam, and ,Dr. Treesider. The veteranswere present in uniform. Afternoon tea was served. ■,'''l; : >'" ''~',- ■'..-.
