BIRKENHEAD ROAD WORKS.

[BY TELEGRAPH.SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, Monday. The Mayor of Birkenhead (Mr. Keyes) and Mr. Wallace waited on the Premier, with the object of urging upon the Government' the necessity for carrying out the grading of the main road leading from the top of the hill to the new wharf to be constructed at Birkenhead. It was pointed out that th» late Premier promised the borough a loan of £4000 to carry out this improvement. It; was. hoped that the present Ministry would fulfil that undertaking. Mr. Kidd strongly supported the loan. He said the fruit traffic upon Birkenhead Wharf was very heavy, and unless the road was made the new wharf would be almost valueless. Sir Joseph Ward said he recogniee'd that- « a promise had been made it should be carried out. He would look into the matto, with a view to giving effect to the wishes of the deputation.
