THE GOLDFIELDS.

WAIOTAHL

MONTHLY DIVIDEND DECLARED.

At a meeting field i yesterday forenoon the directors of the Waiotalii Gold Mining Company declared a dividend of Is 3d a share, which will be payable to shareholders at the company's office, Wyndhamstreet, to-morrow (Wednesday). The shares having recently been increased to four for one, the dividend is equivalent to that previously paid (5:3 monthly), and will absorb £15,000. When shareholders receive the dividend just declared the company will have distributed £199,800 in dividends, etc., amongst holders.

The manager.of the Waiotahi mine reports for the past week as follows:— 6 level : The excavation of the Mary- Ann chamber is being pushed on, and I expect by the end of the week to have this work well in hand. Driving west on the main reef has also been in progress. A break has now come in across this face, which has displaced the reef. I have now started to shoot into the walla to endeavour to pick up its continuation westward. Cure reef: The leading sitope west has been carried up to the western face, and driving west will again be resumed. The leading slope east of the crosscut has also been in hand. The reef here is about 2ft in width, and during the week a few colours of geld have been seen. No. 5 level Driving cast on the main reef has been in progress, and is now in a distance of 212 ft from the No. 1 winze. Another rubbly break has come across the face, heaving the reef into the hangingwall. East of this the reef is again somewhat split up, bands of mullock intervening between the quartz. Good mineral indications occur in bunches, and occasionally good colours of gold are seen in the 'drive. West, the main reef is somewhat broken up, the reef being composed of quartz stringers, intermixed with mullock. The No. 2 winze being sunk on the main reef is now nearly through to No. 6 level. The crosscut being driven from the main shaft has apparently passed through the reef, 'but I intend to drive on a few feet further to make sure of this. The reef where cut through so far is of poor value, but I am hoping for an improvement when we drive further west. The crosscut from the Mary Ann chamber to intersect 'th© Cure reef is in 'a distance of 50ft. In the stope above this level the leading stope east has been carried for a distance of 101 ft from No. 1 winze, and a, leading stope has also been carried west of the rise for a distance of 45ft. A-second stope has been carried in this direction for a distance of 20ft. In the the fourth stope east of No. 1 winze no quartz has been broken owing 'to the men being engaged in the necessajy filling in. This has now been completed, and a start was made to-day to continue this stope east., No. 4 level:. In the north-east drive during the week we have been excavating a chamber for the purpose of sinking another winze- through to No. 5 level. The stopes above this level are still confined west of the No. 1 winze, and are producing a fair amount of crushing dirt, - . NEW OCCIDENTAL. The secretary of the New Occidental Gold Mining Company (Mr. H. J. Lee) has received from the assayer for the Bank of New Zealand, details of an assay made from a sample' of quartz taken from the 2ft reef formation intersected in the mine some time back, and now being driven upon. The assay value of the ore, which was brought to town by one of the directors. Mr. Reynolds, who visited the mine recently, is given as follows: —" Gold per ton,' 6dwt 12gr, at £4 per oz, £1 6s ; silver per t0n,.20z lOdwt, at 2s per oz, ss; total value per ton, £1 lis. • ' SCANDINAVIAN. The Scandinavian Gold Mining Company (Thames) v has been floated, and the registration will, We]' are informed, take place this week. Development work will then be immediately ' started lon the property. The secretary is Mr. W. Gray, and the provisional directors are Messrs. W. McCullough. R. R. McGregor, J. Dawson, J J. Odium, and J. Kneebone. MINERALS, LIMITED. . The mine manager of the Minerals, Limited, reports by telegraph that he lias had three wash-ups for the month of August, which amounted to £165 17s. The first wash-up was from the place that was found poor, and where work Was stopped, and the other two (12s 9d and 22s 2d a- load) are from the east drive, where gold has been found underfoot for a depth of 114 ft. Wages for the month amounted to £97. ;'■ WAIHI GRAND JUNCTION. 'Our London correspondent, writing under date of July 27, Bays:—"The annual meeting' of the Waihi Grand Junction Gold Mining Company will be held on August 1, and the directors, in their annual report, after dealing with the results of development work and the installation of the milling plant, conclude by stating that "in view.. of the present state of the market, it lias for some time seemed improbable that the 10.000 option shares of £3,' maturing at the end of July, would be called. In these' circumstances the directors have arranged by way of loan' for their financial requirements* in order to avoid any further issue of shares." WAITEKOHE PROSPECTING SYNDICATE. / [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Waiiu, Monday. ' The annual meeting of the Waitekohe Syndicate (Katikaiti) was held at Waihi, on Saturday night. Mr. W. J. Gray pre- ' siding. The chairman stated that £634 had been expended during the year. When the reef was intersected' some very high j assays were obtained, but the trial crashing of 10 tons proved unremunerative, The drive is now being continued to intersect another known reef. Encouraging results are being obtained. The chairman and secretary were re-elected. DREDGING. [by telegraph.— PRESS association-.] Dunedik, Monday. During the week ended to-day returns have been reported from 37 dredges, the total gold yield being 11200/, 9dwt; 18gr, or an average of 30oz per dredge. The half-yearly partial cleaning up of the Bluespur and Gabriel's Gully Sluicing Company resulted in a return of 6910z 14dwt 21gr, valued at £2732. MINE MANAGERS' REPORTS. JSSthSU 5 r ° I?en Jills 'August 29).-The drive southwards on the footwall of the big reef has been driven 7 A I for - the week. and there ..',T,,« It n " fur ' her improvement in the value of the ore broken from this reef. The l»rfV«« b, & th « new reef has been extended 6ft. The reef here is still small and very poor. A start was made on Friday last. extending the crosscut (north of the chainber) eastward, and since driving was commenced a leader ,5„, in width has been cut. It carries a few colours of sold. The crosscat westward at the eastern level has been driven 6ft for tine week. Sloping has been carried on as usual but there has been a falling-off in the value of ore broken during the week, especially in that coming from No. 1 block north of the main rise, "die battery has only been crushing two shifts per day since Monday last, and the amount °, f n J n : l . ,ga . m obtained for the week ending the 28th is 1240z.

Miiharu. Royal (September D.-Operations have been continued during the week in the bottom level drive south of the "Koval reef It was extended 12ft through a good class ol sandstone country. The reef formation in the face .is about sft in width, split in two separate parts, and slightly disturbed at this point. New Monowai (August 30).—The low level drive has been extended 15ft during the week, making ,a total from the crosscut of 1219 ft. The quartz in the face looks more kindly, and a strong band of galena is showing, in which we can see a little bright mineral. Waiutahi East (iseptember I).—ln the drive 'at No. 2 level, this reef has been stripped a further distance of 6ft. The leader on the hangingwafl still shows strong colours of gold."* The country*'ls a good class iof firm sandstone, and I expect picked stone when the stringers -junction with the reef.

Champion'-(September I).—The low level has been extended lift • for the week. • More veins ,of quartz \, are being cut, some of which are 'carrying' splendid mineral. '•,/■■" * Waihi Discovery (September I).—Driven ho. 1 crosscut for week 9ft. making 241 ft. A nice 4in leader, very heavily mineralised, is crossing the face, and more water is making in the face. No. 4 reef: I am patting a small drive in ■to cut the reef to get about 20ft of backs, and will then drive along the reer; backs • will be increasing all the time. In 7ft to-day, splendid looking sandstone, with quartz veins intermixed- , New Occidental (September I).— crosscut has been kept going, but the country is tight and progress slow. The 2ft reef formation intersected some time back has been opened out upon, and the drive advanced sft this week. The quartz from the leaders that make up the formation carries good mineral for gold, and there is a probability of the stringers coming together and forming a body of stone. All the small leaders lately intersected have a trend towards this formation, and should junction with it further ahead and enhance the value of the quartz. . Halcyon (September I).—Surface work is being pushed ahead. I cannot go on breaking down the reef until the tramline and hopper are completed, as there is no place to stack the quartz. Another week should 'see the preliminary work through. Waitangi (September I).—The crosscut in the eastern drive is in 22ft, without any sign of the footwall. We continue to see gold at each breaking down, and also good minerals. At the low level, where good country is showing in the face, preliminary work is proceeding, and the roadway should be completed in a day or two. Southern Queen (September I).— winze from No. 1 level is now down 39ft, and the reef at the bottom of the winze is about 18in wide, and shows gold at each breaking down. During the last few days 41b of picked state have been selected. At No. 2 level the drive on the Blue reef has been extended lift, making 66ft opened up. The reef in the face is about 18in wide, well mineralised, and shows colours of gold frequently. The Atlantic, reef has now been driven on 55ft, and is improving in volume and value. Good blotches of gold were seen in the quartz last breaking down. ;\ '..-■ :■-'• . Moanataiari Extended (September I).— reef mentioned in my last has been followed along the surface with an open cutting about 50ft. It varies from 3ft up to 6ft in thickness, and strong colours of gold continue to be freely seen in the hangingwall portion. It is intended directly to sink a winze at the point where the best gold was seen, and also start a crosscut, which will give 40ft of backs, to thoroughly test this reef. In my opinion the prospects will fully warrant this work. _..,. Roval Oak (August 31).-Power and Blithe are driving a level to get under the gold got by them above, and in breaking down the leader l.'iev can see colours and dabs of gold in the stone. Luhra and party have secured 151b of picked stone, and Allan and party (on a dropper from Farmers reef) 141b. Trafalgar (September I).— the week the winze on the- Shamrock .reef has been sunk sft, makin 29ft. The reef maintains its size (3ft). ad strong colours of coarse gold have been seen. At the low level about 50ft of the handngwall branch leader has been broken down, the quartz having a most favourable appearance, and showing colours of gold. _____
