FIRES.
A fire broke out yesterday morning in a six-roomed dwelling in Napier-street, occupied by Mrs. Geo. Ashby. It appea.rs that Mrs. Ashby went into a neighbour's house, leaving a lighted gas ring on a piece of wood in the kitchen. On her return ten minutes later she discovered the room ablaze. The alarm was given, and the City Brigade responding promptly the fire was extinguished. Besides the kitchen, the diningroom was damaged, the total damage being about £20. There was no insurance on the furniture, but the building is insured for £190 by the owner, Mr. Wm. O'Meara. The Devonport Fire Brigade received a call lust evening from the grocery shop of Mr. (i. Bates. Calliope Road. A bedroom in. the upper storey of the building was ablaze, but the brigade getting quickly to work soon had the flames under control. It is believed that the fire was caused by a candle coming in contact with the curtains. The extent of the damage was not available last night, but' both the furniture and the building were insured. Shortly after six o'clock last night a. fire occurred in a cottage in Campbellstreet, Thames, occupied by Mrs. Thompson. It was discovered before it had got much hold and with the assistance of the neighbours was quickly extinguished before much damage was done. The fire was caused by a lighted candle being left near some clothing, which caught fire. [BY TELEGRAPH. — own' CORRESPONDENT.] OisnoiWK, Monday. A nine-roomed house at Tupara, occupied by Mr. Thomas Reedy, has been burned down. The insurances were £100 on the house and £50 on the furniture, both in the Manchester OiHce. The house was totally destroyed. [BY TELEGRAPH.— PRESS ASSOCIATION".] Christ-church, Monday. A five-roomed house at Avonside, with its contents, was entirely destroyed by tire to-night. There were live young children alone in the house when the outbreak occurred, but they were all got out safely. The house, which; Was owned by Mr. 0. Collins, was insured, £200, but the furniture, belonging to I tie tenant, Mr. F. Malardy, was uninsured.
