WHEN RANJI STOPPED THE TRAIN.
Being under engagement to take a cricket team from Cambridge to play in a local match. Prince Rnnjitsinhjt got an eleven together and went to the railway station on the appointed morning.
When the lime came for the train to start, however, only half-a-dozen of his men had turned up, and the train'steamed out of the station with this detachment. But, craning his neck from the carriage window, Ranji. perceived several men carrying cricket bags running towards the station.
Rushing to the communication-cord Ranji. pulled it down, and the train stopped with a jerk. The guard came along and a.-ked what was the trouble. Ranji. meekly told him. ''Are you aware," replied the official, "that you will bo fined £5 for this?" "Certainly not." said Ranji. "The directions say, 'In case of emergency.' and I can't very well play a cricket match with half a team, can I?"
Whcthei the guard sa.v the cogency of this reasoning, or whether he was amenable ,'o a handsome "tin," I do not pretend to say: I only know "that Ranji. wasn't fined £5. and heard no more of the matter. Tho train collected the dilatory cricketers, and thev wen:, on and won their match. From "The Hon. i. S. Jackson," by Percy Cross Standing, published by the Messrs. C'assell.
