At a meeting of the Auckland Trades and Labour Council last evening a letter was read from the Dimedin Trades and Labour Council, stating that they had passed a resolution expressing confidence in Mr. Tregear as Secretary for Labour, and rebntting the attacks made on him by the New Zealand Employers' Federation, who had asked.that Mr Tregear should be removed from the. office of Secretary for ! Labour. Mr. D'Authereau said he was pleased at the reply made by the Premier. The Employers' Federation had got back as < much as they gave. J Mr. A. Rosser (secretary) said the Ceun- ' cil should move a resolution against the attack made upon Mr. Tregear. He pro- ( posed: " That this Trades and Labour j Council, which is also the executive for : New Zealand, in its capacity. as executive for the colony, hereby expresses its sym- . pathy with Mr. Tregear in the unwarrantable attack made upon him as Secretary for- Labour by the Employers' Federation, ( and that we express confidence in his fair | and impartial administration of the. Labour i Department." He remarked that Mr. L Tregear was a very valuable man to New Zealand. (Applause.) He was not what , they called a fighting man. yet he had the I . courage of his convictions." After all, it ' i was in the carrying out of details of legis- j , | lation that Mr. Tregear had proved so , valuable. He had done his duty, as they j expected every man to do. ' ":. ' » Mr. D'Authereau seconded the motion. ] He said Mr. Tregear had every reason to ( feel gratified at the spontaneous votes of l confidence that had been given right ] throughout New Zealand. (Hear, hear.) t Mr. Peake, in supporting the motion, f said he did not think they could find a < more just and more impartial man than j Mr. Tregear, who was trying to do his ♦ best for the people of the colony.
