[EY TELEGRAPH.— CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington*, Wednesday. „ i The Government steamer Hinemoa. on her f. ! arrival at Westport last week;, from her cruise to the Southern lighthouses, was instructed by the Marine Department te steam on to Cook's Strait, in »rder to - search for the derelict vessel sighted a few days ago by the. steamer Toroa off Tera--5 whiti. The Hinemoa left Westport last 1 Sunday morning, after being barbound for ? three days. Whilst zig-zagging across 2 Cook's Strait the Hinemoa sighted what appeared to be a capsized vessel, but on closer ' examination the object proved tc be the 2 carcase of a. humpback whale, about 60ft in 7 length. There were hundreds of Cape 5 pigeons and; other sea birds around the , hmf, which is estimated to have been worth quite £150 to the whalers. At mid--1 day on Monday, whilst examining the 2 vicinity of Kapiti Island, a portion of the , side of a white-painted, diagonally-built I ship's boat of kauri was. discovered on 1 M»ko Island. The wreckage had appar- : ently been recently thrown ashore, as it was not above high-water mark. Shortly after--5 wards a portion of a cabin table was picked * up on Mayhew Island, about .high-water () mark. By appearances it had not been long in the water. The Hinemoa returned D to Wclliagton yesterday afternoon. All though the wreckage was examined by seveL ral shipping people, no one was able tc > identify it. The Hinemoa will sail to-day >, for Bruce Bay, via the Brothers' lighthouse.
