BURGLARIES.
ROBBERY AT A BOARDING- - } '.;- HOUSE. \ !: ' • £360 AND JEWELLERY STOLEN. A burglary took place at Glenalvon boardlnghouse some time on Monday night. The burglar confined his attention to .one room, in what is known as the overflow house," a separate building, which is utilised when Glenalvon proper is full. The man occupying the room that was entered was a reccut arrival from the South, his intention being to proceed to America' by the Sonoma. His luggage was ransacked,,and £500 in notes and £60 in gold taken. Besides this, the thief took. possession of a quantity of jewellery. The thief appears to have been a cool band, for it is stated that a broken whisky bottle was found in the bathroom, the intruder evidently' having partaken of the whisky. The floor of the bathroom was also strewn with wearing apparel belonging to the unfortunate boarder. During the night someone heard a noise, but believing it to be a boarder moving about mado no inquiry. i'' c 'ALLEGED SHOPBREAKING.'' The Ponsonby police arrested a man named Peter Rafferty yesterday on a charge of breaking and entering the shop of Ed. C. Sheafs, butcher, Avondale. It appears that this shop was broken into on the night of the 2nd inst., an entrance being effected through a window. A quantity of meat was taken, Rafferty . will appear before the Court this morning. ■ __
