In accordance with your instructions I have made a, careful examination of this oil, not merely as to the physical characteristics, but I have subjected it to fractional distillation and other •processes . bringing the produets into conditions of commercial value, on the. lines, as far as possible, with that which will be obtainable on the practical scale- - To ensure having sufficient to isolate the smaller, valuable --crystalline constituents, I have dealt with cue. gallon' for this purpose, dividing the product into two parts, the first giving the results of distillation to a specific : gravity of .863. together with the still residues, the second in which the distillation was pushed to the ultimate results, portions of which have been retired, the whole of the' products of both series being submitted herewith. . '■'■"' 100. ■'"'■,' The Benzines are capable of being fractionated into two'or three groups of lighter and heavier spirits than the specific . gravity shows. * ; The illuminating oils represent merely 46 ' per cent, of the whole, and it will be possible to increase the bulk of A oil by the use of high pressure steam, technically known as " Cracking." The lubricating oils representing over 23 per cent, will have greater viscosity if distilled under the influence of super-heated i steam- .-, The. Paraffin is equal alter double pressure : to 6.5 per cent.. Of which 1.9 is soft, and 4.5 is hard scale. In the. practical working on the large, system a considerable amount of. vaselines will be also recovered. These will reduce the" percentage of lubricating oil, but being valuable products will result in a gain. The pitch will also be of value, though the quantity will not be large. The loss is due to disassociation in distilling at high temperature in the absence of steam, and includes the tar matters removed in refining ; the illuminating oils. The "A" burning oil gives a flame quite j eoual in colour to the best American oil. and ! burnt under the same conditions gives no ' more smoke than the American sample, but this result was obtainable only, after the same refining treatment as the American oil is subjected to. • There will be no difficulty in raising the " A" burning oil from '35 to 40 per cent. The colour is pale yellow in the product submitted, but this can be brought to an almost colourless condition in the j treatment. In conclusion, the crude petroleum sub- i mitted is a valuable article, every portion of I its product having a marketable value, and I it requires a steady and continuous outflow | with proper treatment to insure its commer- j cial success '" .I (Signed) -: .1. 11.
