SPORTING NOTES.

The Wellington' Racing Club .will inaugurate their winter ' meeting « Tf"'rehlJt*ra . day. The 'principal events of. to-day are the Wellington Steeplechase and the Winter Hurdle Race. The field for the firstnamed race will not, Ix- as large as was expected, and it may probably dwindle daw* to the following half a down: — Slow Torn list 41b, Swimmer lOst lllb, Irish lOst tib, Play fair lOst 31b, Moccasin 10st, Kongoa ;9*t 71b, and Kohunui fel Tib. Telegrams to build from TroHtham state that Slow Toot is in great buckle. That being so he must prove hard to beat. The Auckland-owned pair, Irish and Swimmer, must, however, each bo accounted to have a good chance, and the firstnamed is mentioned as one of the most likely to negotiate the course in safety. In the Winter Hurdle Race the top weight. Exmoor, should be able to make a hold bid for victory. Exmoor's most dangerous opponents will probably prove to be Cavalry and Hydrant.

Dennis Morraghan experienced a good time at the Gisborne meeting with Hakaria and Cuiragno, but the Eilerslto trainer's visit to the East- Coast with the two geldings was not one of unalloyed joy. Hakaria became sore, and as a result had to be brought back to Auckland, while his stable-mate, who it was intended to ship at Gisborne to Wellington by the Talune. had to remain at the former place owing to heavy weather conditions preventing- his being put on board the Union liner. Cuiragno'being engaged in the Winter Hurdle Race at Wellington with the handy burden of 9st 91b, he was; reckoned to have a decent chance, and it is a pity that his owner was not in a. position to put his horse into commission for to-day's race at Trcntham.

Mr. >*. Morgan's pair, Sol and Baritone, having been accepted for in the Wellington Steeplechase, it seemed as though they would bo numbered amongst the field to contest the- first cross-country event at Trentham. However, after a survey of the situation it- was deemed inadvisable to despatch them to Wellington. The Carbine colt Spearmint, who won the. Derby in brilliant, style, is credited with being built, on very massive lines, and further that he resembles his sire in a remarkable degree. He is said to be taller than Carbine, but otherwise he is very like his sire in colour, markings, and general conformation, while some of those who have seen father and son race aver that the action of the sen and the manner in which he runs his races are very strongly reminiscent of his illustrious sire. English papers to hand this week show : that the New Zealand colt Nootuiform was saddled up to contest the Epsom Plate of 500sovs (seven furlongs) on .May 29. The son of Multiform was quoted at an outside price, and he failed to gain' a situation. Dinneford (7sfc lllb) was returned ' the winner, and Noctuiform was called upon to concede him 171b. As Dinneford won the Prince of Wales' Stakes last week,, it- will be recognised that Noctuiform was set, a stiff cask to beat him with over a stone the worst of the weights. Cambrian (by Oyrenian) and Celtic (by Seaton Delaval), who will be Auckland's main hope in the three-year-old class during the coming season, are still engaged in the Great Northern Guineas and Great Northern Derby. ■'....■■ The veteran Dingo is still carrying silk in Victoria.. The Sou'-wester gelding finished last in the Williarnstown Steeplechase, run . on the 23rd tilt; It is estimated that the crowd which assembled to .witness the running of' the Derby this year numbered well over half a million persons. INTERPROVINCIAL GOSSIP. [BT TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENTS.] , WELLINGTON. . Tuesday. Some two-year-olds are engaged in ' the Trial Plate, run on the second day of the [Wellington Racing Club's Winter Meeting. They include two of the Hon. J. D. Ornabnd's — Intelligence (Birkenheadlndustry) and Warril (Birkenhead—Nixie)—Prevail (Conqueror—Rimlock), and Bonnette (Conqueror —Stephanotis). The last-named is trained at Porirua, and will carry the livery of Captain Braithwaite, of Government House staff. CANTERBURY. Tuesday. After. nearly a week of fine weather the tracks are now in fair order, and the local trainers are pushing their charges along in earnest. The Riccarton team for the Wellington meeting, consists of Magnificence, Wi Waka, Stronghold, Chryseis, Rongoa, Tirole,' and Slow Tom. Of this lot Wi Waka, Chryseis, and, Slow Tom are the most likely winners. ■' : \

D. Price, the North Island lightweight, is at: present spending a holiday hero with his parents, who recently returned . from Sydney. Price will remain here till after the Grand National Meeting. Next season ] understand he will do the riding for the Hon. J. D. Ormond's stable.

Helios gave a good exhibition of jumping: over four (flights of hurdles during the week. He should be a useful candidate for hunters' engagements.

Ir.gleneuk has again developed symptoms of lameness. It is to be hoped it may not prove serious, ; but coming so soon after a spell the prospects of her training on are not encouraging. .

Buluwayo has been doing serviceable work whenever the tracks permitted. He is rapidly getting into form, and he promises to be well forward for the Winter Cup. Eurus, who is looking remarkably well, is bowling along freely, and if lie continues sound he should be in rare fettle for the Grand National Meeting. Morraghan has given Phaetonitis and Ability an easy time since they returned from the North. Both horses are in fine condition for their engagements next month. Blythemaid has made her appearance at Riccarton. She" looks lusty," and has evidently wintered well. She is now being trained by McNamara, a recent arrival from Australia, and. a, relative, I believe, of Gladsome's late trainer. I hear that Welbeok is getting through, a solid preparation at Ashburton, and his chance in the Grand National Hurdle Race is being strongly advocated. Betting on the New Zealand Cup continues quiet. During the week the following business has been transacted: — looo to 45 Uenuku, 700 to 20 Notus. 500 to 15 Flamed, 500 to 12 Ghoorka. The Grand National double has been responsible for a good deal of betting during the week. ' NAPIER, Tuesday. At. a meeting of the committee of the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club, held yesterday, the secretary presented an interim statement in connection with the recent winter meeting, which showed a profit of £524. It was decided to notify the A. and P. Society that the club would redeem £1000 worth of debenture? on August 20. The secretary was instructed to refute an allegation in ,the Weekly Press that the club had delayed the start of race* for the benefit, of totalisator investments. Tho weather was so boisterous at Gisborne on Sunday that the .Hawke's Bay horses which competed at the northern meeting could not be shipped aboard the Talune, and will have to wait there until Wednesday. It was intended to ship the Auckland pair, Cuiragno and Kruger, who figure as acceptors for the Wellington meeting, by the same steamer to proceed to Wellington to fulfil their engagements, but owing to the unforeseen occurrence they will not be able now to reach their destination in time to undertake the contract entered into on their behalf. Rose Madder was railed from Hastings to Wellington yesterday to take part in the meeting. ~, . Goldfield, Monarque, Reehabite, and Captain Shannon have been despatched to fulfil engagements at the Wellington meeting. 'lop Rose, Roseshcot's younger brother, one of the team under the control of J. Rollo, is looking in tine bloom at present. So far he has not been asked any serious questions, but upon Rotlo'a return from Trentham (which place he left for to-day .with Monarque) Top Rose will probably be set going in earnest. Rollo has also got under his watchful eye a neat stamp of a coming three-year-old gelding, by San Fran —Waimairirie. :; The Hawke's Bay trainer. T. Qtiinlivan, jun., has collected a. good sum in aid of the widow and orphans of the late S. Fergus.
