GERMAN COALING STATIONS
ONE NEAR CHILL By Telegraph.— Association.— London, July 9. T?'he Daily Mail's Berlin correspondent says that Berlin financiers have leased the Island of Chiloe from the Chilian Government, and intend to colonise it with artisans and establish a, coaling station there.
Chile© is on th» western coast of. South America, and with name .smaller islands forms a province of the Chilian Republic. It is. 95 miles long and 35 broad, hilly ami densely wooded, except near the coast, where there is some cultivation. Excellent potatoes are produced there in great, abundance . The chid' town and port, Ancud,; has a population of 4000. The total population of the island is about 70,000. It is not probable that a German company has obtained a lease of the whole island or large part of it, or control of its inhabitant:-. Doubtless the company is the same aft that which has established coaling station* to provide markets for German coal at Fimchal, Las Pal--mas, and on. an itland south of Bornao.
