[fit TELEGRAPH.— ASSOCIATION*.] Palmerston North, Monday. Regarbing a paragraph that is being-pub-lished in many papers stating that there are 200 empty bouses in Palmerston, investigations by a Standard reporter show the estimate to be grossly exaggerated; It was ascertained that the number was below 100. Of these many are old and unfit for habitation. The census in April showed 119 "uninhabited" buildings. Tenants are forsaking old and inconvenient premises for newer dwellings. There is a steady demand for convenient workmen's cottages. - * Napier, Monday. A meeting of ratepayers was held tonight to discuss the question of widening Dickens-street. It was decided to form a committee of those interested to draw up a scheme for widening the street,} and then to bring the matter before the Borough (Journal .; '' '
