A RING AND AN OLD GUN.
[by TELEGRAPH.OWN CORRESPONDENT.]
Wellington, Tuesday.. ■ When* the Resident Commissioner' of Nine : (Mr. C. P. Maxwell) was in New Zealand last, year, the late Mr. Seddon promised him that a gun should be sent to the island for saluting and signalling purposes; An old 24-pounder was accordingly sent, and by a recent mail the following letter, signed by "IviHg" Togia and the members of the Island Council, was received by tlio Hon. C. H. Mills; for transmission to the. Premier:"Greeting. We, the undersigned king and chiefs of Nine desire respectfully to thank the Government of New Zealand for their kindness in presenting a large gun to the inhabitants of Niue Island.. We are much pleased with it. Mr. Maxwell has placed it near the flagstaff, in Alofi, which overshadows the grave of one of our people slain by the Peruvian slavers. When we look upon this gun and behold the Hag of the Empire floating above it, we. regard it as an emblem that never again shall we be liable to be stolen from our "homes by wicked men, to meet a miserable end in captivity. We are proud and thankful that we now form part of. the great British Empire, and again thank youfor your generosity."
