AUCKLAND AND SUBURBS. TOTAL POPULATION, 39,617. INCREASE OF 22 PER CENT., Tin: completion of the census returns shows a-great increase in the total population <>! Auckland city ami suburbs, embracing the •area between the Tamaki and the Wiiau, and the murine suburbs of Devon port, Birkenhead, Nort-hcote, and Tukupuna. jLiie populous township of Ilowick and tue township of Otahuhu, it will be '.'rut-iced, are. not included. The tola! population of the area, which 'may be classed as Auckland proper, is 39,617. as compared with 73,537 in 1901 and 63.768 in 1896. The increase for the past five years has thus been 16,080, or nearly 22 per cent. In I<sol the. increase, as compared with 1896, was 9769, or about 15 per cert. The ratio of increase litis thus grown considerably during the last (juintpiennial period. In Auckland city itself the increase during the r-t iive years was 11, or a fraction under 10 per cent., as against an increase of about 3 3-5 per cent, lor the 1826-1801-period. The increase in the population for the whole area of Auckland a.nd suburbs between 1896 and 1906 is 25,849, or an increase of over 40 per cent, during the last decade. The following table drives the results of the last- three enumerations, and this year's increase for the city, the six boroughs, and the road districts forming he combined district: — Inc. in 1896. 1901.
