OUR GOLDFIELDS.

SUMMARY. - ■ Owing to the interruption in the San Francisco mail service the present gold returns extend over a period of four instead of . three weeks, as has been the case for some time past. The yield for the four weeks is valued at £104,435 5s 2d, and must be regarded as very satisfactory, showing as it does that the output is steadily increasing. ■ The Ohiaemuri iie.lrl contributes £82,164 0s 2d, the Thames £21,442 19s 3d, and Coromandel £828 5s 9d. The quantity of gold exported from New Zealand last month was 42,2030z, valued at ' £171,065. The total quantity exported; . since the beginning of the present year was 216,4880z, valued at £874,878. being an- increase of 11,4000z, valued at £46,986, compared with the corresponding period of 1905. The export of silver last' month was 180,4850z, valued at £19,589. The valuable cross lode discovered a few weeks ago at the No. 7 level in the'Waihi mine has been intersected in the level above (No. 6). At the No. 7 level the ore body, which will in future be known as the lidward reef, was found to be 14ft in width, and has now been driven on for between 200 ft and 300 ft. Although the exceptionally high assay values at first, met with have not been maintained, the reef for the full distance driven on has been proved to carry highly payable values. At No. 6 level its width is Bft, and for the distance driven on it the assay results have proved very satisfactory, the ore giving a value of from £3 to £4" per ton. Thus the Luge ore reserves of this famous mine have been further added to. The electric power station for the Waihi Grand Junction Company, which was commenced last October, has been completed, I and is . ready for supplying electricity over the mine. • The steam plant consists of three Babcock-Wilcox „water-tube boilers, each having a total heating surface of 3140 square feet, ana capable of evaporating 10,0001b of water per hour. Steam is generated at 2001b per square inch, and superheated 12G.0 Fahr. Mechanical chaingrate stokers are fitted, enabling slack coal to be burnt. . There are three, ltichards, Westgarth-Garson's steam turbines at present installed,', each capable of. developing 580 b.h.p., the speed being 3000 revolutions per minute.. The .'motors for driving the stamps ; and battery machinery have also been erected. The electric winding engine is expected shortly, and when - this is erected the mine will be ready for working full, swing. ' It has been stated here that two of the London directors of the Grand Junction Company intend coming out to the colony in October, and that a schcnie for the "development: of the .company's; property will then be determined. It is thought probable that as the; additional areas recently acquired by the company are at the western side of the Martha Hill, and divided from the Grand Junction section by the Waihi Company's area, a subsidiary company will be formed, and a shaft sunk to pick up the southern"continuation of the Waihi reef system. Matters in connection with ; the Talisman j Consolidated Company's property are proceeding about the same as usual, but the I low level works have not been look- j ing quite so well lately as they were , a few months ago. . The' extension of the No.: 13 level is being carried on both north and ;south, but both faces have been in poor country. The reel in the northernface is carrying low. values, and is not expected to improve for some distance ahead. ! With regard to the southern end, the face is being ' continued on the line of reef with the hope of picking up the ore chute as it comes clown from the Bonanza. The desired point is yet some distance off. A rise is being carried , up from the No. 13 level on payable ore, for ventilation purposes, also tracing up the reef and providing a basis for future sloping operations. A good block of stone is being opened up here. With regard to the No. 12 level a. crosscut was run out from, the southern face with the object of locating the .lode, and a quartz format ion was recently intersected. -'So far. however, the reef has . proved of pool' quality, but it is intended to follow it along in a southerly direction .. with the ; object, of ascertaining it it will lead into the Bonanza ore chute. Sloping operations from the No. 12 level upward ate being carried on with successful results, the greater portion of vthe crushing material being furnished by the stopes. The bulk of the £3000 provided by the London . holders of the Option over the : Waihi Consolidated Company's property for the purpose of sinking a shaft with the object of testing the reef system at a greater . depth has been expended, and the shaft is now down about 350 ft. The Auckland 1 directors of the Consolidated Company are now negotiating with the London syndicate with a view to securing a further sum of money to continue sinking the shaft, and it is expected that the negotiations will '. ' prove "successful. ' - The' iuteution-" is to carry the shaft ..down to 800 ft or 850 ft i' The rich ore in the workings above haft i not yet been met with at the No. 6 level ; of tlie Waiotahi mine, but exploration, work in this connection is still being vigorously pushed on.' In otjier parts of the mine the ' development works continue of a highly , satisfactory nature, and the output from , the property is steadilv drawing closer ; to £20,000 per month. The new. battery is now in full work, and 60 head of stamps are being kept go'ing regularly on the ore from the mine. Other Thames properties also continue to contribute more or less to the gold output, the latest mine in the district to join in the ranks of the bullionproducers being the Golden Belt, a crushing of 300 : tons of ore just completed having ' yielded bullion worth over £1000. : THE GOLD RETURNS.
