MISS GERTIE CAMPION.
Sir,—Referring to a "letter in your issue of yesterday I am sorry if there is the slightest" misunderstanding about Miss Campion case. She has no special claim on the public, and sin; is most deeply grateful for all they have done for her. "it is true that a considerable sum was raised for her while she was in South Africa, but owing to the terrible cost of living there at the time and to the large sums paid to nurses and doctors there the money was all spent. The fact- is that Miss Campion is absolutely penniless to-dav. but I did not think it desirable to mention to what desperate straits she has been reduced lest it might be said 1 was taking an unfair advantage of the charitably disposed. Knowing the fads. I ventured to appeal to Miss Campion's many friends here who had not previously had an opportunity of assisting her. Unlike many of the inmates, T understand. .Miss Campion can only remain in the institution while she is able to pay, because she is not a native of the coiony, nor was she residing here. Believe me I deeply sympathise with all those unfortunate patients mentioned by your correspondent, and I am most, willing to help in any way towards a fund for their assistance. J. F. Montague.
