RACECOURSE ACCIDENT.

JOCKEY SERIOUSLY INJURED AT ELLERSLIE. Diking the running of the Remuera Hurdle Race at the Auckland Racing Club's Great Northern Meeting at Ellerslie yesterday afternoon. Samuel Fergus, the wellknown cross-country rider, met with a. serious accident. Fergus had the mount on Silica, and the horse striking the first hurdle came down, throwing its rider, and roiling over him. The injured jockey, who made no attempt to rise, was brought in to the casualtyroom on the racing club's.ambulance. An examination by Dis. Savage, Sha,iman, and Walker disclosed the fact, that Fergus had fractured his spine, and it was at Olfce recognised that his case was extremely serious. , The injured jockey was subsequently removed to the Auckland Hospital, when it was found necessary to perform an operation. This was done by Dr. Savage last evening. On inquiry early this morning it was ascertained that Fergus was in a very serious condition.
