The annual social of the Waihi Bowling Club took place on Thursday .evening, when a very pleasing ceremony took place, namely, the presentation, of a handsome pocketbook and fountain pen to Mr. J. Hencl&rsdu. who has so successfully carried out the duties of secretary since the institution of the club. The presentation was made by Mr. Foster. who also handed over the trophies won by Mr. Hind (a set of bowls) and by Mr. Dorranoo (a pair of slippers). Mr. W. Corbett, assistant borough engineer, who has just resigned on account of ill-health, was entertained by the borough workmen on Thursday evening, and was presented by them with a. valuable gold watch a3 a token of esteem. A lad named Gordon Eyles met with a painful accident in Savage Road this afternoon. He was driving on- a baker's cart when the back strap broke and young Eyles jumped to the ground. At the same time the horse, being frightened, ran away. The wheel passed over young Eyles' ankle, which it broke. An important sale of properly took place this afternoon through Mr. C. J. A. Graham. What is known as Saunders' Block (consisting of the co-operative store and two shops) was purchased by Mr. C. Lever, the price paid being about £2000. '$ The Waihi Liberal and Labour Federation held another of their socials last night, and the function proved one of the most successful yet held tinder the auspices of the Federation. There was'a. record attendance. During the evening solos were contributed by Messrs. Long, H. T. King, DuHstan, and Corringham. At the monthly meeting of the Hospital Trustees last night the matron reported that during-' May 22 patients had been admitted. 16 had been discharged, and five had died, leaving 18 patients in the institution on May 31. With regard to the introduction of the eight hours' system the matron says: " Several of the members of the Board have said to me that they would be" glad to. see the eight, hours' system worked here. -1 have calculated that with a staff of throe sisters, and eight probationers this could be managed with the hospital as it now is. When the.new wards are opened, of course, a larger staff will be required, so at the present time we should need, two more probationers." Dr. Claridge, in the course of his report, stated that Nurses Murray and Tre-. whella had passed their first examination for the State certificate in anatomy and physiology. The reports were adopted. Mr. J. Foster (who presided in the absence of the Mayor) brought up the question of the matron suspending a nurse, and after some discussion it was decided to.hold a special meeting to consider the whole matter. Nurse Doherty was appointed charge nurse at £50 per year, and Nurse Williams was appointed a probationer nurse. Adjutant McAuley received word to-night from headquarters that he has been appoint--ed to take charge of the army corps at New Plymouth, and he is to be succeeded at Waihi by Adjutant Wilksham.
