IRRIGATION IN OTAGO.

Speaking at a banquet to Mr. Macpherson,' M.H.8., at Ophir, Mr. John Wilson, of Lander, who has devoted considerable attention to the question of irrigation, on which he may be regarded as an authority, strongly urged that something practical should lie done in the direction of establishing an irrigation scheme. Acres innumerable, were lying dry, and ready for water, millions of leads of which were flowing to waste. If the Government borrowed a. million to irrigate the district it would not be. borrowing: at. all. as. the increased value of land alone would make the borrowed money a mere mvth. Mr. Macpherson said he was fully alive to the value of irrigation, and so he believed was the Government, as was shown by the application tor the head waters of the Taieri. The Chief Commissioner' for Crown Lands was how reporting onthe, whole' question. ;,■■
