The Chief Justice yesterday sat here as a Royal Commissioner to hear the petition of William Humphries, New Plymouth, who claims from the Crown £2126 as compensation for being deposed of titles to land acquired in presumed accordance with law. Humphries petitioned Parliament in connection with the matter, and the Native Affairs Committee of the House decided that a judge of the Supreme Court should hold an inquiry and report lo the Governor. .During the hearing of the case an interesting document was produced by the .Reserves Commissioner, being a copy of the original deed of the sale of 35C0 acres of land, on which New Plymouth and suburbs were built, to the New Zealand' Land Company. ■■ Tha- price paid was 40 .red blankets, £o,white blankets, 4-0 pieces print, 36 shirts,• 400 yd calico, 20 frocks, 11 cloth caps, 3001b soap, nine,, double guns, 2501b powder, 54 pots powder, four jackets, 12 roundabouts, six boxes percussion caps, five women's garments, six common garments, one linen garment, six shawls, three waistcoats,' three rugs, three pairs trousers, 60 iron pots, 12 calves, and £50.'sterling,"'
