Business in the local nit and produce markets during the past week has been very slow. .In produce lines the market has been overstocked with imported potatoes, and'many importers have been forced to send their consignments to the auction rooms, the. 'result being that sales have had to be, effected at a loss to the importers. Consignment • from Tasmania were , generally of first-class quality, but those from Melbourne, .Sydney, and Southern porta were either of secondclasS or inferior quality, which had a detrimental' effect; on the market. Only a few came Irotn Wa.iUat.o, and," being of Attic quality, realised up to and over the values of imported lilies. In onion/? the large quantities of inferior quality being - held by growers and merchants has had the effcct of keeping prices down, but anything of prime quality showing keeping condition had an upward value. Vegetables of all kinds .showed a falling off in supply and better prices ruled. There was 110 change in the values of dairy produce. Butter was quite up to re-' quirementa at present prices. Egg 3 were in increased supply at the auctions at about last Week's rates. -Although'-cheese was scarce, there was change 011 late quotations. The fruit market was well supplied, and there was a most noticeable improvement, in the price of apples, whilst lemon.? were hard to quit. In Island fruits the Navua landed a. small cargo of bananas' from Fiji on Monday, but owing to the bad f weather prevailing the market was bad. Prices, however, are regarded as satisfactory. The poultry market was fully supplied and prices were better. There was a very limited demand for young pigs, low prices being obtained. The following were the ruling prices at the auction sales to-day:— Field Produce—Potatoes: Waikato, extra prime £12 ton, good £11; Tasmanian. prime ted, £12; \ ictorian, £9 to £10 (according to quality); medium and , indifferent samples, £6 to £7; £ l i ut in I '"' I ,riine ' £nt 0 £12.
