COMPLIMENTARY SOCIAL TO MR. GREENSLADE, M.H.R.

A courLiMEXTARr social was tendered to Mr. H. J. Greenslade in the Town Hall, Hamilton, on Wednesday evening by friends from all parts of the Waikato district. The .Mayor-took the chair, and was supported on the platform by Messrs. F. E. Batiine, C. H. Poole, F. Lawi-v, and H. Poland, M.'sH.R. " The Mayor, on behalf of the townspeople, tendered a hearty welcome to the visitors. Mr. F. E. Baume, M.H.R., said it gave him great pleasure to be present to welcome their new recruit. Speaking on the subject allotted to him, " Education," ho said that education was the development of faculty, but many people confused education and instruction. They were absolutely distinct. Many people said wo should have agricultural education in our schools. He had steadfastly opposed anything of the sort. He would r - oppose any addition to the syllabus which did not tend to the development of faculty; They must first of all develop faculty and teach the child to know, to think, and then the acquisition would be a very easy matter. Scientific agriculture should be stimulated in every possible way, but at the right time and in the proper manner. When in the fourth or fifth standard was not. the time. * . Mr.; Poland. M.H.R., said he had known Mr. Greenslade for over 12 years, and congratulated the people o5 Waikato in having him for their member. He enjoined all to sink petty differences and work together for the good of their district and country. The Rev. Father Darby gavo an address ou " Citizenship." He "predicted a great future for New Zealand. Mr. Poole, M.H.R.. spoke on "Liberty." He said when a politician was going to the poll the questions most frequently asked were, "What are you going to do for us?" "What arc you 'going to'give us?" Most candidates were very generously inclined about that, time and promised everything within reach if by doing so they could please their hearers. Mr. F. Lawry, M.H.R..said he. as the oldest member in the North, Island, had been very largely instrumental in putting the greatest Premier in the world in the position ho occupied to-day. Mr. Lawry also referred to the constitution of the Auckland Harbour Board. - The. Hon. J. McGowan said an alteration would shortly be made in the local franchise. Every local body should have universal suffrage. It. was not £s d made a man. He then quoted^ figures showing how.the colony had advanced. The Government before long would .be able to throw open large blooks of native land. It was absolutely necessary that every man who wanted it should have an opportunity of acquiring laud. Mr. Greenslade said he felt that they were honouring him too much. People in the Waikato have formed a verv high opinion of his energy and ability, and he hoped that when he came back after three years' service they would still sing "For He's a Jolly Good' Fellow."
