DcnediNj. Thursday. The Minister for Customs (Mr. Mills) docs not hold out much hope of the prohibition of the importation of grapes from Australia being removed. When that restriction was brought under his notice, he said that both up North and in Inverearjrill he had heard the opinion expressed that to allow grapes to come in free would discourage those going in for viticulture in New Zealand. Hon ever, he promised to lay the matter before the Cabinet, who would consider it when the tariff revision comas tip for discussion. He was rather more sanguine about getting reduced railway freights for Island fruits, a good deal of which goes inland to country consumers.
