London, May 29. i The Chief Secretary for Ireland 3 (Mr. James Bryce) announced in the 5 House of Commons to-day that he would make a grant for three years i for teaching the Irish language in fc the national schools, r At present Irish may be used as a means i of instruction in the schools of the Irishspeaking districts. There is a chair of Irish at the Royal University of Ireland and professorships at Cork College,-Galway College, - and the Catholic Training College for teach--1 ers, arid Irish-speaking inspectors are sent to the schools. Some of the Irish political ' r leaders consider the increase in the use of 3 the Irish language essential to the maintenance of the natibnal spirit among the people. 1 ii. i —
