Wellington, Monday. Mb. Huntley Eliot*, late Under-Secre-tary for Mines, has been appointed to the vacant seat on the Royal Commission to inquire into the Te Ante and other native educational endowments. The tirst meeting of the Commission will be held on May 10.

GisnoßNK, Monday. Mr. Hemes, M.H.R., arrived overhaul ;'rom Opotiki to-day. He states that he was agreeably surprised at the ease with which the construction of a railway line can be continued through from Gisborne, and also at the quantity of valuable timber in the Motu district.
