GREY LYNN.

MR. J. FARRELL INSTALLED FOR A

THIRD TERM.

The installation or Mr. John Farrell as Mayor of Grey Lynn for a third term- took place' last evening, prior to the commence-ment-of the ordinary meeting of the Council. Mr. A. Donald was voted to the chair for the occasion.

Mr. Donald said that the councillors and the residents of the borough had every reason to be proud of the manner in which the duties of Mayor had been carried out by Mr. Farrell, and he had much pleasure in taking the chair for the purpose of installing the Mayor for a further term.

Mr. Farrell, on taking the chair, expressed his -pleasure and pride on being again elected to the position of Mayor, without opposition. He referred to the " Greater Auckland" poll, which takes place to-mor-row, and said that in view of this event he did not propose at present to place a detailed statement of the Council's position before the Council. The borough, he said, had continued to progress, the number of building permits granted during the year being 110, of which about 50 were for new premises. lie referred to the approaching completion of the street improvements, including the through road from the Great North Road to Richmond Road. It had been slated, he said, that Grey Lynn had done nothing to secure a good drainage scheme, but, ■on the contrary, they had laid' out a complete scheme on the lines of what was at the time regarded as the accepted system of the City "Council. When it was found that it was uncertain whether the City Council would adopt the septic system, it was agreed not to proceed further with the Grey Lynn scheme at present,, but to await the decision of the City Council, it being, of course, necessary that the drainage of the two districts should be carried out on similar lines. The general health of the district compared favourably with that of other districts. An important matter which had been pushed forward by the Council towards a successful conclusion was the Great North Road deviation, in regard to which they had had the hearty assistance of Messrs. Fowlds and Bollard, M.'sH.R. He alluded to the case against the Auckland Gas Company, regarding which, he said, further legal advice was to be obtained, and as to the trouble with the Assets Realisation Board, the present, Council had decided on legal advice to form two of the roads, and to proceed against the Board for the cost of the work. He. would defer a detailed statement of the finances of the Council until the next meeting. He thanked the councillors and officials for their hearty co-operation during the yast year. Mr. W. S. Smith spoke very highly of the services rendered by the Mayor during the past two years, and said that Mr. Farrell's work in* connection with the Greater Auckland scheme' was particularly deserving of mention.. He moved, -'That the Council accord ■ the Mayor a hearty vote of thanks for past services."Mr. A. A. Creamer seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously, the Mayor making a suitable acknowledgment. At the conclusion of the. meeting of the Council, the councillors and officials partook of the Mayor's hospitality, and a pleasant hour was spent in harmony. The health of the'. Mayor was proposed by Dr. Fiengley, district health officer, and drunk with musical honours. A number of other toasts were also honoured.
