There is preponderating testimony that ntrthihg approaching a paiiie occurred, though a" lady passenger accuses some of the male passengers of behaving like madmen in their efforts to reach the boats. The effect of the steamer striking the lowing hawser was to bring the barque down on her at a great pice. The passengers were thrown down by the shock of the impact, and it is marvellous how all escaped the falling funnel and the a© companyiag wreckage. v ■ The, fires were extinguished by th* tremendous inrush of water, and tht* engineroom staff had barely time to m.'ike their escape on deck. Boats from TT.M.s. Powerful and {he Naval Department at Garden Island were on the scene in a few minutes, and rescued the passengers. /■-'..■!.
