LAWN TENNIS.

The Easter tournament parsed off mc=t successfully; the beautiful weather prevailin?,' right through ?are players an opportunity of spending a. very pleasant holiday, and this they were not slow to take advantage of. The arrangements made bv the committee were distinctly good, and" everything went without a hitch. Cowing to ?ke pin? | itself— th* courts hur-d»ned ;.d soma very good tennis was sliOwn, and >•■. it of the matches were keenly contested, with exciting finishes. No new skyers came into prominence, but .Smith, of Eden and Epsom, showed good form in the doubles, and' gives promise of coming into the front rank; W. A. Brown, Morpeth, and Dickson are improved players, the former especially giving a fine display in the singles. The "final of the men's doubles was worth going a long way to see; the winners combined well, but it was only after a stirring struggle thattheir opponents wore beaten. In the ladies' events the best form was shown bv Misses Udy, Gray, Williams, N. Brown, and Mrs. Cooper. I did not notice any of the younger players showing particular promise, most of them wanting in accuracy and judgment. These features may of course some with experience, but I could not pick out any future champions. Both Keith and Grossman failed to carry their big handicaps very far in the singles. The former, however, made a game struggle in the doubles and looked like coming right through. On the whole the gathering was most enjoyable and reflects credit on all concerned. " The courts played very true and warm praise is due to Mr. Mair, the Eden and Epsom ground superintendent, and the caretaker 'for the fine order in which they are kept. The annual meeting of the Zealandia Winter Club was held on Wednesday. A start will be made on the 28th inst.. and no doubt the courts will enjoy their usual popularity as the cold we&the. approaches. Several tournaments were held in the country during the holidays. From particulars received they appear to have been well attended and the events keenly contested.

Miss Ward beat Miss Powdrell in the Wellington Provincial Championship. The announcement that an English team will visit Australasia next season will be received with pleasure by teams enthusiasts. Without doubt the visitors will compete at the championship meeting at Christehurch, so there is a treat in store for those who can journey to the meeting. It is to be hoped the City Council will see tlicir way to have courts formed on the vacant ground in Stanley-street. The Auckland Club has taken the matter up and it is now under consideration by the authorities. The appearance of the Domain approach would be much improved by the existence of tennis courts, and the change would, no doubt, be much appreciated by tennis players and the public alike.
