" PUSH" OUTRAGE.
WOMAN BRUTALLY ASSAULTED. One of the worst outbreaks of larrikin "push" lawlessness that has occurred for some time took place at South Melbourne in the early hours of Sunday morning (April 1), when a young woman was brutally assaulted by several members of the notoriou* "flying angels" gang, and only escaped shocking usage through the fortunate circumstance that her screams were heard by Constable McGowan. The girl, whose name is Lily Mitchell, a tailored, missed her last train on Saturday night, and started to walk out to her lodgings at South Melbourne. She was going in the back way, when three young men suddenly caught hold of her. One of them, seizing her suddenly by the throat, threw her violently on the ground. Two of the other men rushed to help the first scoundrel, and one of them then attempted to commit au offence, whil* his companions held the girl. She struggled violently, and her screams were heard by Countable McGowan. He dashed up and grabbed two of the men. The. third made off at top speed, and after a tussle of some minutes, one of the remaining two got away. Then ensued a fierce fight between Constable McGowan and the third man. who was eventually landed in the watchhouse. His two companions called at the jvatchhouse next day to inquire what charge had been made against the prisoner, whose name is Patrick (iniuame. They were identified by Constable McGowan, and also locked up on a serious charge.
