COPPER MINING AT PUPUKE.
[BV TELEGRAPH—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Kai:o, Saturday. Copper mining is proceeding at Pupuke at the south end of the harbour (about eight miles from Totara North), where. there appears to be a mountain of copper ore. The chief claim, that of the Ferguson Company, is on native land. At present the ownership of part of this claiifi is disputed by Messrs. Hare and Rat]en. The other claims on the Crown lands adjacent are all taken up. The Ferguson Company have put in five prospecting drives, al" of which are giving good indication?. The lodes all run north-west »md south-east. The manager of the Ferguson Company, Mr. J. Gribble, who conies from Barrabarrsi, South Australia, lias had over 20 years' experience of copper mining. Only six or seven men are now working, pending a settlement of the dispute. Some seven tons of good stone have been taken out, and it is calculated that it will yield an average of from 20 to 25 per cent, of pure copper.
