Mr. Hayes,inspecting engineer in the Mines Department, hits forwarded his resignation to the Government. Mr. Hayes wat appointed an inspector of mines in 3897; and in 1899 lie was appointed inspecting engineer. It is understood that lie has accepted the managership of a mine that is 'being developed by- a syndicate in NelSon. - ; " ' ' ■ '■ ''

Captain T. Broun, F.E.S., the Government entomologist and ' fruit inspector, at Auckland, has been promoted to the rank of major. • His commission as captain dated from September, 1863; that of major is dated from August 1, 1905. ;. Major Broirn obtained his first commission , itt the Imperial army on March 17, 1855, .during the time of f the Crimean 'war.' * He. afterwards served, vrfth .his regiment throughout, the Indian Mutiny, and the New Zealand war.
