THE SOCIETY GIRL.
It is she who holds the world entranced, j who is the cynosure of its eyes. She is its i joyous spirit" incarnate. She hais her symbol in the gorgeous butterfly, in-bodied, filmly-winged, fluttering away through summer gardens, lightly poising on flower or leaf, yet on the wing again, dipping into, the golden glories- of : themorning or into the deep vistas "of noonday; but on till it vanishes in the grey of evening; the thing born of the day amd dying with it, yet passing its existence in free and careless gladness, ever gracious because beautiful.; Yet this light-hearted creature, society girl; too, may toil for her pleasure. The morning before the"; ball, where she is to queen it. she is possibly ha.id at stitching the dress she is to wear; or helping the seamstress with the garden-party frock for the next day. It is not even out of the .iinm'ils that she has- made her own cup dress, copied it so . successfully from a model sent out by the supply stores that it was described in the society paipers<as ; a Paris importation. She may trim her hats oh the same scale. She can cover her parasols like a craftsman, having two or three for less cost than one from the'shop. She makes her own blouses, her neck-wear, hemstitches and embroiders her own handkerchiefs, sews the lace on her lingerie, and economises by thrift•'; all : the details of her wardrobe.' She does her own hair more beautifullv than a professionn,l would do it. She is generally very keen about money ma Iters, too. As "a ; ride, she is not embarrassed with riches. She has an allowance, sometimes within two" figures, amd this lias to he spun out to the furthest capa- ! city. Thus is she clever as a financier and | economist. , But she' would never let it. ;be ! known. : The butterfly would seem to have ! lost some of the gold dust of its wings.; I Hers is the art to conceal her skill and her ; real and right-down ability -for,;hard,.work.;;:
